Bob Barr on Changing The Status Quo

Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party presidential candidate for 2008, spoke to an intimate group of about 40 Mason students in Patriot’s Lounge in Student Union Building I in the early, rainy evening of Friday, Sept. 12.

Barr discussed his grievances with the two-party system in America, in which the Democrat and Republican Parties dominate every election. Third parties are not usually highly regarded and do not have the luxury of automatic ballot access.

Giving Mason Some Space: October Course

McCain and Palin Gain Support in Fairfax

Republican presidential nominee Senator John McCain (R.-Ariz.) and his running mate, Governor Sarah Palin (R.-Alaska), set up a campaign rally at Van Dyck Park in Fairfax, Va. Wednesday Sept. 10, 2008. Party officials claimed to have had over 23,000 attendees. The venue was moved from its original location of Fairfax High School to Van Dyck Park due to an overwhelming response from Virginian voters, according to a press release sent out by the McCain campaign.

Counterinsurgent Specialists Speak to Mason Students

A panel of counterinsurgency specialists spoke on the implementation and concept of the Improvised Explosive Device in Dewberry Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 10.
Students of Dr. Burl Self’s geography of insurgency, structure of urban government and political geography classes gathered to learn about these IEDs.

Women’s Soccer Tripped Up By Indiana University

On a damp Friday evening at George Mason Stadium, the Mason women’s soccer team fell to Indiana University 4-1. After winning back-to-back shutout victories against Hartford and Mississippi State on the strength of great defense and brilliant goaltending by junior Kelly Keelan, George Mason University was hoping to build on that momentum and even add to its 3-3 record this season.

The Unassumed Patriot Leader: Tom O’Connor

Compared to Head Men’s Basketball Coach Jim Larranaga and the men’s basketball players, Athletic Director Tom O’Connor is a relative unknown in the Patriot fan community. It’s not surprising then that fans are unaware that much of George Mason University’s impressive athletic success these past few years (the Final Four run made by the men’s basketball team in 2006, having nationally ranked ranked men’s volleyball and women’s lacrosse teams) is due in part to the relatively behind-the-scenes work done by O’Connor.

Broadside Club of the Week: GMUEA

The GMU Environmental Awareness Group has been a club on campus for the past year and was founded by Ashley Sitar. So far, the club has 12 members. GMUEA, whose goal is to increase awareness of the environment at George Mason University, is looking to attract as many people as possible in order to increase involvement in the club’s projects.

Members of the Student Government and Sodexho met to discuss George Mason University students’ needs regarding campus food on the second level of the Johnson Center, Wednesday, Sept. 10.

Graduate Students of Mason Unite

The Graduate and Professional Student Association will be implemented after a year of constitutional workshops and planning. Graduate and professional students, who total approximately 10,000 and make up at least a third of George Mason University’s student population, will soon have a platform, where they can voice their opinions and concerns.
