Mason student develops university weather program

George Mason University now has its own weather program.

Nick Stasiak, a freshman at Mason, is starting “Forecast GMU,” which will provide daily weather forecasts for the Fairfax area.

Stasiak has experience with forecasting.

As of right now, “Forecast GMU” is only on social networking sites, but Stasiak says the station will most likely expand once it has gotten off the ground.

MASON-SECURE replaces old GMU wireless network

Many students are familiar with having to login to UAC wireless whenever they want to access the internet.  MASON-SECURE is George Mason’s newest wireless network, and contains a one-time setup that does not require students to login to the UAC page every time they connect.

David Robertson is the service delivery manager for Network Engineering and Technology at Mason.

“MASON-SECURE is an authentication protocol network,” Robertson said.  “It allows students to login once and have it remember their password.”

Mason Dining to promote local foods at farmers' market

In an effort to promote locally grown produce, George Mason University Dining is hosting its first farmers’ market on campus.

“The purpose of the farmers’ market is to draw attention to our buying local products,” said Ben McElhaney, the sustainability coordinator at Mason. McElhaney explained that Mason buys from farms within a 250-mile radius, a region that reaches parts of New York and North Carolina.

Capital One departs, Apple Federal Credit Union moves in

After five years at George Mason University, Capital One Bank has decided to depart.

The bank had a five-year contract with Mason, and according to David Atkins, director of contract management and licensing at Mason, the bank sought the break.

“Capital One’s representative shared that it was a business decision in the best interest of the bank,” Atkins said.

Apple Federal Credit Union, the replacement, moved into the Capital One location in the Johnson Center in mid-August. Its ATMs should be in place by mid-September.
