Black White and Thread exhibits the history of black hair

The Art and Design Building’s Fine Art Gallery springs into the semester with work by VCU professor and artist, Sonya Clark, in her exhibit “Black and White and Thread All Over.”

The exhibit will be shown until Feb. 21, in conjunction with the Department of African and African American Studies and in honor of Black History Month.

REVIEW: An Evening of One-Acts

Mason Players host their first one-act showcase with shows that cast ominous shadows on the human condition.

There are very few opportunities for students see a one act play. Until very recently, Mason had yet to find a way to produce shorter work that exceeded ten minutes but fell short of a full 90 minute play.

The “Evening of One-Acts” hosted by Mason Players from Nov. 21-24 finally gave students the chance to see two established one-act plays. As previous studio shows have been, these plays were directed, acted and designed by students.

English Department challenges students to write a novel

            Writing a novel is difficult. Writing one in a month sounds impossible, but that is exactly what some Mason students intend to do this November when they participate in National Novel Writing Month, or better known as NaNoWriMo.

This annual nonprofit event challenges participants to write 50,000 words in a single month and attracts thousands of aspiring writers from around the globe.

Irish-American student returns to Ireland to film his senior project

Senior Paul O’Halloran, a film and video studies major, is headed to Ireland this Christmas to shoot his senior film, “Ard Laoch na hÉireann,” which is dedicated to his great-grandfather. O’Halloran, who is Irish, said he hopes the film will show a different side of Ireland. O’Halloran answered some questions about his film for Fourth Estate.

World Blues Tour sets toes tapping at Center for the Arts concert

The World Blues Tour stops at Mason’s CFA with world-renowned performers in a night dedicated to American and international blues music.  

On Nov. 15, the iconic Taj Mahal Trio and international artists Vusi Mahlasela of South Africa and Fredericks Brown, originally from New Zealand, performed in the World Blues Tour at the Center for the Arts.

Documentary exposing the dangers of uranium mining features at Cinema Arts Theatre

Cinema Arts Theatre on Main Street held a free screening and Q&A of an environmental documentary titled “Hot Water,” written and produced by Lizabeth Rogers.

The event, held on Nov. 14, was sponsored by the We the People Campaign. It exposed the possible hazards of uranium mining in the United States.

Nuclear power plants have a legacy of both financial and environmental strain through uranium mining, leaving behind enough chemical residues to contaminate local air, food, and water supplies.

The Fall Dance Concert exhibits the emotional work of senior dance majors

Nov. 14 marks the first senior-produced dance concert for Mason’s School of Dance, where senior dance majors will debut their own theater pieces that they have spent the past semester creating in the Fall Dance Concert.
