A statement by the DCist.com reports that local coffee shop, Murky Coffee, recently closed its doors in Capitol Hill. According to the article, the business was forced to shut down one of its two locations due to owing the city government nearly $425,000 in sales tax.
Murky Coffee is popular among George Mason University students due to its accessibility via the Metro to Arlington, Va. Also, for students, the local coffee shop provides a different atmosphere when compared to a franchised Starbucks; however, it resembles Jammin’ Java in Vienna, Va. due to its promotion of local bands that play there as part of the “Murky Upstairs” concert series.
According to a legal notice, several items within the coffee shop will be sold to the general public in an auction sale. This will be handled through cashier checks, which will allow the Washington, D.C. Treasurer to receive the funds within 24 hours instead of taking longer by cashing personal checks.
The Washington Post reports that “the items for sale include multiple stainless steel espresso machines, a counter dishwasher with a built-in booster heater and many sealed bags of organic and non-organic coffee beans.”
The various auction items will be shown at 660 Pennsylvania Avenue SE in Washington, D.C. on two days within the week. From 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., the items available for auction will be offered on Tuesday, April 15 and again on Friday, April 18 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Currently, Murky Coffee’s Arlington, Va. location is still open and in full operation.
