Mason Police release annual security report outlining campus crime

Earlier this week Mason Police released their Annual Security Report which discusses campus crime statistics. (Jenna Beaver)

George Mason University Policed released the Annual Security Report, which includes crime statistics on campus, Oct. 1. The statistics only include incidents that were reported to police or school officials.

Of the reported incidents, the Fairfax campus saw a decrease in more than half (from 11 to 5) of forcible sexual offenses from 2008 to 2009 according to the report. However, for the first time since 2007 a hate crime was reported to police; a burglary/vandalism case was classified as a hate crime in the report because of ‘sexual orientation bias.’ Drug arrests increased from 52 to 71 from 2008 to 2009, but alcohol related arrests dropped slightly. Referrals for alcohol related offenses dropped about 40 percent from 256 in 2008 to 151 in 2009.

Statistics for the other Mason campuses and other Mason affiliated areas, such as student residencies, are also available on the report. The report is available to students online at
