New Student Media magazine focuses on 'Mason Around the Globe'

Mason Around the Globe

The Office of Student Media’s latest issue of VoxPop is out and available to the George Mason University community.

Entitled Mason Around the Globe, it focuses on the opportunities Mason offers it students to study or travel abroad.

The Office of Student Media has been giving talented students the opportunity to share their ideas with their peers through VoxPop since the magazine began in 2006. VoxPop is published once a semester, and each issue focuses on a different topic or issue that the editor-in-chief selects. Past issues have focused on the presidential election, environmental issues, the men’s basketball team’s run to the Final Four and the local music scene.

Nicole Wiesenhahn, the magazine’s current editor-in-chief, decided to focus this semester’s VoxPop on studying abroad after she completed the Honors Semester Program at the University of Oxford this past fall semester through Mason. Wiesenhahn says that the experience was so profound that she wanted to dedicate the magazine to studying abroad in order to inform students of the life-changing opportunity available to them through various programs and departments within the university.

Mason Around the Globe aims to inform students of the benefits of studying abroad and to communicate the values of such experiences. Most of the magazine is made up on student testimonials, where individual students share their first-hand experience with various study abroad programs. The programs featured in the magazine range from semester programs to spring break programs to international students coming to Mason, and they cover a variety of amazing locales, from England to Egypt to the Philippines.

The magazine also features an interview with Professor Al Fuertes, who created and leads two study abroad programs; information directly from the Center from Global Education on the various study abroad programs they offer; and information about the Global Proficiency Certificate program, a program designed to encourage Mason students to learn about different cultures and ways of life.

Copies have been distributed to various departments and locations around the Fairfax campus, including the English Department, the Communication Department, Admissions, Jazzman’s and Starbucks. Additional copies are available at The Office of Student Media, located in Suite 1201 in The Hub (SUB II), to the right of the mailroom.

Stop by Student Media to pick up your copy, or e-mail Nicole Wiesenhahn to get copies delivered to your department, organization or establishment.
