The Office of Student Involvement has announced comedienne and actor Wanda Sykes will perform at the Patriot Center, on the Fairfax campus, during Family Weekend in October.

Sykes is set to perform Saturday, Oct. 15 at 8 p.m. Tickets for Mason students and community members with a valid Mason ID are currently on sale at the Patriot Center box office. Tickets for the general public will go on sale Sept. 12.

According to Director of the Office of Student Involvement Lauren Long, Sykes is the first female comedienne chosen to perform at the event in its four-year history.

Comic Lewis Black performed in 2008, followed by Wayne Brady in 2009, and Seth Meyers took the stage last fall.

“We felt that Wanda was a good choice considering she has a long-standing history, appeals to many different constituencies of people and has the name recognition that we were looking for,” Long wrote in an email to C2M.

Wanda Sykes has appeared on several television shows including her own late night talk show on FOX, “The Wanda Sykes Show.” Some may also recognize Sykes from her roles in HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and Comedy Central’s “Crank Yankers.”

In addition to her television roles, Sykes has appeared in feature films such as “Evan Almighty” and “Monster-in-Law” and has lent her voice to the animated features “Over The Hedge” as well as “The Barnyard.” Her first book, a collection of essays titled, Yeah. I Said It, was published in 2004.
