Speaker to show Mason students what it means to be a modern man

Professional higher education lecturer Chris Blackburn will be at Mason this Monday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. in the JC Cinema to present “Re-writing the Man Code,” a lecture examining the role of young men in today’s society.  Blackburn will address how outdated views on masculinity and manliness shape the thoughts and expressions of young men, and how these limitations and expectations effect the male mindset.  Presented by Housing and Residence Life.

Academy Award nominated director to give Q&A following film screenings

Documentary filmmaker Roko Belic, nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary for the 1999 film "Genghis Blues", will available to answer questions following two screenings of his most recent documentary, "Happy."  Showings will occur on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in Innovation Hall room 103, and Thursday, Nov. 17 at noon in the JC Cinema.  "Happy" explores concepts of human happiness through interviews with people from 14 countries and all walks of life, incorporating recent findings in positive psychology.  Presented by the Center for Consciousness and Transformation.

Comedian to deliver unique Brand of comedy to Patriot Center

Eccentric comedian Russell Brand will be sharing his unique comedic stylings with the Patriot Center this Thursday, Nov. 17 at 8 p.m.  Brand is known for his unconventional and controversial form of comedy as well as appearing in various films such as "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "Get Him to the Greek."  Tickets are available through all Ticketmaster outlets, including the Patriot Center Box Office, for $45 and $25.  Doors open at 7 p.m.

Panel discussion to examine what it means to be multiethnic in America

The Native American & Indigenous Alliance will be holding a panel discussion that investigates the state of multiethnic life in the United States this Thursday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in SUBI room 2400.  The multiethnic population is currently the fastest growing demographic in America, and this panel will examine the unique perks and challenges of balancing multiple ethnic identities.  Presented by the Office of Diversity Programs and Services as part of Native American Heritage Month.

Documentary screening to give realistic look at the life of a soldier in a modern combat zone

The Office of Military Services will hold a screening of Academy Award nominated documentary "Restrepo" this Tuesday, Nov. 15 from 6:15 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the JC Cinema.  "Restrepo" follows the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team of the US Army as they spend 15 months defending an outpost in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley.  A brief discussion will follow the screening and pizza will be provided.
