Chain Bridge Road construction to heavily impact commutes in March

This spring, commuter students may notice condensed traffic around Chain Bridge Road. The City of Fairfax will begin the demolition and replacement of an existing 90-year-old bridge over Accotink Creek in late March or early April.

"The existing bridge is about 90 years old and it's functionally and structurally obsolete, it's had its useful life but the concrete is starting to weaken and we need to replace it so it can carry the present day vehicle loads," said Director of Public Works, David Summers.

Inaugural team handball tournament a success

This past weekend, George Mason University’s Recreation Department held their first ever Handball Tournament. Handball is a sport much like soccer, but is played with hands instead of feet. The tournament was held in the Field House and included 10 teams made up of 114 participants. The tournament began with pool play, which included three pools of teams, with the top two from each moving on to a single elimination round. The final match was between Kappa Sigma (Red) and Theta Chi with Kappa Sigma (Red) finishing on top in a very close matchup.

Cooks and Crafts: Jersey Shore No Bake Cake

To continue with the Italian theme that permeates this issue’s Lifestyle section, I thought I should share a recipe as an homage to one of the most Italian places in the U.S.—New Jersey.

As a Jersey native, I could go on about the culinary joys that only the Garden State has to offer. From boardwalk pizza to massive bagels, New Jersey—excuse the pun—takes the cake. However, New Jersey not only masters the art of grease and lard, but it also has some of the best tasting fruits and vegetables including corn, tomatoes and blueberries.

OPINION: Legal representation hinders the goals of student conduct process

Dear Editor:

Thank you for the invitation to provide an opinion on HB 1123, a bill that has been proposed in the Virginia legislature. that The proposed bill would allow attorneys to actively participate in student conduct hearings at public institutions by representing students who are involved in cases that could result in suspension or expulsion from the institution.  As a professional educator, I am concerned about HB1123 for several reasons.

Also, with the recent progress from the bill’s main supervisor, Student Government’s Attorney General, Rachael Grimesey, the bill is set to be completed by the end of April. Grimesey has been in charge of the declaration’s overall progress since its recent creation last semester.

OPINION: Israel Apartheid Week unjustly generalizes international debate

Letter to the Editor:

Every February, students supporting the Boycott-Divestment-Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel pepper university campuses with vitriolic lectures and protests demanding the cultural and academic boycott of Israeli institutions by the international community.  They claim that Israel treats Palestinians inhumanely by occupying their territory and racially discriminating against Israel’s own Arab citizens.  These, they claim, amount to "apartheid", not unlike the treatment of the South African Blacks before 1994.
