Thinking ahead to the fall? Thinking ahead to life after college and the start of your career? Maybe it’s time to consider some experience in the fast-paced world of online journalism.

Connect2Mason is gearing up for an exciting year, building off the momentum of the last. We’ve got some big plans in store for the fall—more events, more convergence, opinion pieces and a polished look for the site, to name a few—and to aid in our endeavor, we’ve restructured and added positions to our staff.

Open positions include paid and volunteer opportunities for editors, reporters, photographers, videographers and web developers. Opportunities for credit and work study are available for those who qualify.

Senior Reporters

Student Life Reporter Student Life Reporter Looking for a senior staff writer to maintain the student life news beat and who can generate three to four written stories per week.  Interested candidates should be deadline oriented and passionate about bringing campus news to the Mason community.

The student life beat encompasses all student clubs and organizations and Greek life.  Effective coverage of student life would produce a variety of stories that feature what it means to be a student at Mason away from the classroom and athletics.  Stories should reflect event coverage, news topics and feature pieces.

Administration Reporter Looking for a senior staff writer to maintain the administration news beat and who can generate three to four written stories per week.  Interested candidates should be deadline oriented and passionate about bringing campus news to the Mason community.
The administration news beat encompasses all of the administrative departments within the university leadership, including the president’s office and office of the provost.



Staff Writers

Housing Reporter Looking for a staff writer to maintain the housing news beat and who can generate two to three written stories per week.  Interested candidates should be deadline oriented and passionate about bringing campus news to the Mason community.

Coverage of the housing news beat includes reporting on housing events and process as well as responding to breaking news stories originating in the residence halls, such as elevator malfunctions and other emergencies.

College of Science Reporter Looking for a staff writer to maintain the College of Science news beat and who can generate two to three written stories per week.  Interested candidates should be deadline oriented and passionate about bringing campus news to the Mason community.

Effective coverage of the College of Science will include reporting on events and happenings within the college as well as general news stories focused on science topics and that can be sourced within the beat.

College of Visual and Performing Arts Reporter Looking for a staff writer to maintain the College of Visual and Performing Arts news beat and who can generate two to three written stories per week.  Interested candidates should be deadline oriented and passionate about bringing campus news to the Mason community.

Coverage of the visual and performing arts will include attending and reporting on performances, gallery openings and other college events.  Stories from this beat will include basic news stories and entertainment features.

College of Humanities and Social Sciences Reporter Looking for a staff writer to maintain the College of Humanities and Social Sciences news beat and who can generate two to three written stories per week.  Interested candidates should be deadline oriented and passionate about bringing campus news to the Mason community.

Effective coverage of this beat will include reporting on events and happenings within the college as well as general news stories focused on subject areas taught within humanities and social sciences and that can be sourced within the beat.

College of Health and Human Services Reporter Looking for a staff writer to maintain the College of Health and Human Services news beat and who can generate two to three written stories per week.  Interested candidates should be deadline oriented and passionate about bringing campus news to the Mason community.

Arlington Campus Reporter Looking for a staff writer to maintain the Arlington Campus news beat and who can generate two to three written stories per week.  Interested candidates should be deadline oriented and passionate about bringing campus news to the Mason community.

Coverage of the Arlington Campus news beat includes general news and feature stories based on the events and happenings on the Arlington Campus.

Alumni Reporter Looking for a staff writer to maintain the alumni news beat and who can generate two to three written stories per week.  Interested candidates should be deadline oriented and passionate about bringing campus news to the Mason community.

Effective coverage of the alumni beat will include reporting on important news events related to former Mason students as well as feature stories that showcase the life of alumni after leaving Mason.

Men’s and Women’s Basketball Reporter Looking for a staff sports writer to maintain the men’s and women’s basketball beat and who can generate two to three written stories per week. Interested candidates must be willing to attend games during the week and/or weekend, deadline oriented and passionate about Mason hoops.

Effective coverage of the men’s and women’s basketball beat would include attending and covering games and events, providing breaking news and other

Golf, Men’s and Women’s Tennis Reporter Looking for a staff sports writer to maintain the men’s golf and the men’s and women’s tennis beats and who can generate two to three written stories per week. Interested candidates must be willing to attend home matches during the week and/or weekends, deadline oriented and passionate about Mason sports.

Effective coverage of the men’s golf and men’s and women’s tennis beats would include attending and covering matches and events, providing breaking news and other necessary information to the Mason community in a timely manner.

Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Men’s and Women’s Swimming/Diving Reporter Looking for a staff sports writer to maintain the men’s and women’s cross country and the men’s and women’s swimming/diving beats and who can generate two to three written stories per week. Interested candidates must be willing to attend home meets during the week and/or weekends, deadline oriented and passionate about Mason sports.

Effective coverage of the cross country and swimming/diving beats would include attending and covering meets and events, providing breaking news and other necessary information to the Mason community in a timely manner.


Contributors

Board of Visitors Reporter Looking for a contributing writer who can generate two to three written stories per month.  Interested candidates should be deadline oriented and passionate about bringing campus news to the Mason community.

Coverage of the Board of Visitors includes attending BOV meetings and reporting on the board’s actions.

Building and Facilities Reporter Looking for a contributing writer who can generate four to five written stories per month.  Interested candidates should be deadline oriented and passionate about bringing campus news to the Mason community.

Mason’s campus is constantly growing and changing as far as infrastructure is concerned.  Coverage of this beat reports on those changes and the seemingly endless construction on campus.

 

Photographers, Videographers

Photographers Looking for a creative student who wants to tell stories visually and who can contribute to a weekly photography project and/or can be on call when a story requires a photograph. Interested candidates should be able to look at news and determine what picture could assist in best telling the story or tell the story on its own.

Experience with either Canon or Nikon cameras and photo-editing software such as Photoshop is preferred.
 

Videographers Looking for a creative student who wants to tell stories visually and who can contribute to a weekly video project and/or can be on call when a story requires video footage. Interested candidates should be able to look at news and determine what footage could assist in best telling the story or tell the story on its own.

Experience with Final Cut, After Effects, YouTube and other video-editing tools and platforms is preferred.
 

Web Development

Web Developer Looking for a web-savvy student who wants to strengthen the Connect2Mason user experience by working to improve its content management system and helping with content delivery platforms such as mobile.  

Experience with mobile platforms and Drupal, JavaScript and jQuery is preferred. 
 

Advertising

Salesperson Looking for a student with an eye for business to manage and improve the site’s advertising system and outreach to businesses about opportunities with C2M. The student will work closely with the Office of Student Media Community Manager and other sales staff. Position is paid by commission.   


Public Relations / Events

Assistant Public Relations Manager Looking for a big-picture thinker who wants to strengthen and share the Connect2Mason brand with the Mason community by helping plan, organize and hold events for students and faculty. The student will also help with promotional items for the site and convergence projects within the Office of Student Media.
