Provost discusses budget concerns in university forum

On September 10th, Provost Peter Stearns and Fiscal Services Controller Beth Brock held a forum to discuss recent budget concerns with the GMU community.

“We do mean to do [the forums] periodically,” Stearns told a packed room of administration and faculty in Mason Hall. “The main point is to show where budget issues are.” The forum was broadcasted live to both the Arlington and Prince William campuses.

San Antonio mayor holds Obama rally at Mason

On September 8, San Antonio mayor and keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention, Juilán Castro attended a rally at George Mason University in support of President Obama's reelection campaign. Castro’s speech at the DNC took place a few days prior to the rally in Charlotte, North Carolina.

GMU and the community prepare for construction of West Campus Connector

This fall, construction will begin on the West Campus Connector, a road that will provide easier access between George Mason University’s central Fairfax location and the facilities just west of campus.

“The construction timeline is still being developed. Tentatively we think some part of the construction will start in November this year,” said Erik Backus, an engineering planner for the university.

Mason aims to make university services more accessible through new app

Students will have easier access to university services this fall with the launch of Mobile Mason, George Mason University’s official mobile application. The app, which took about a year to plan and develop, offers a variety of free tools to students.

“People love the map,” said Kim Shriver, senior web developer from Web Communications in the University Relations office.

New President Ángel Cabrera & Rector Daniel Clemente

After Alan Merten’s 15-year tenure as president, a new face will greet students returning this fall as Ángel Cabrera takes the helm of the university.

The Board of Visitors announced the appointment of Cabrera in December but he did not start his new position until the beginning of July.

Cabrera, age 44, will replace Alan Merten who served as president since 1996.

New restaurants to open in Johnson Center

Beginning this fall the Johnson Center will look a little different to returning students, as George Mason University Dining will open three new restaurants.

Among the new restaurants in the Johnson Center will be Red Hot & Blue, Hot Spot and a salad station. The name of the salad station is being voted for on Mason Dining’s Facebook page. As of July 2nd, “Garden Spot” is the top choice with 20 votes, followed by “Sprouts” and “Sea of Green.”
