FIRST FRIDAYS (New Event) - Book Club With A Twist

Wed, 09/10/2008 - 14:00
What is First Fridays Book Club With A Twist? It's a monthly book club for those that enjoy a good read, a good talk, and meeting new people. What's the twist? Well, we have two: First, at our book club you get to meet the author, who will lead the discussion; and, second, our event begins and ends with pre and post networking receptions. First Fridays is about connecting people through shared lifestyles and so is our book club with a twist. If you are a book lover who enjoys thought provoking, in-depth discussions about literature, this club is for you. First Fridays DC - Book Club With A Twist Sponsored by Borders Books & Music We cordially invite you to this month's meeting of the First Fridays Book Club With A Twist which will be held at Bohemian Caverns and will be hosted by Jabari Asim. His book, The N Word, is our book of the month. This is not just a book signing, therefore we ask that you read the book in advance so you can join the discussion. You may purchase this month's book from our book club sponsor, Borders Books & Music, for 20% off. However, even if you don't have time to read the book, we encourage you to attend. There is no cost to join our book club discussion but we require you to RSVP due to limited seating (RSVP below). Food and refreshments may be purchased from Bohemian Caverns throughout the evening for your pleasure and convenience. If you will be attending with a group of four or more, you may reserve a table for your group by sending us an email at BookClub@FirstFridaysDC.com. First Fridays DC - Book Club With A Twist Sponsored by Borders Books & Music Wednesday, February 13, 2008 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM Bohemian Caverns Liv Room 2003 11th Street, NW Washington DC 20001 [Map and Directions] Schedule 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM - Welcome Networking Reception 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM - Book Club Discussion By Jabari Asim 9:00 PM – 10:00 PM - Closing Reception And Book Signing Book Club Host Jabari Asim Book Description A renowned cultural critic untangles the twisted history and future of racism through its most volatile word. The N Word reveals how the term "nigger" has both reflected and spread the scourge of bigotry in America over the four hundred years since it was first spoken on our shores. Asim pinpoints Thomas Jefferson as the source of our enduring image of th e In a seminal but now obscure essay, Jefferson marshaled a welter of pseudoscience to define the stereotype of a shiftless child-man with huge appetites and stunted self control. Asim reveals how nineteenth-centur y then colluded with popular culture to amplify this slander. What began as false generalizations became institutionalized in every corner of our society: the arts and sciences, sports, the law, and on the streets. Asim's conclusion is as original as his premise. He argues that even when uttered with the opposite intent by hipsters and hip-hop icons, the slur helps keep blacks at the bottom of America's socioeconomic ladder. But Asim also proves there is a place for the word in the mouths and on the pens of those who truly understand its twisted history - from Mark Twain to Dave Chappelle to Mos Def. Only when we know its legacy can we loosen this slur'sgrip on our national psyche. About the Author JABARI ASIM is deputy editor of the Washington Post Book World. He also writes a weekly syndicated column on popular culture. His writing has appeared in Essence, Salon, the Los Angeles Times, the Village Voice, the Hungry Mind Review, Emerge, and elsewhere. He lives in Maryland with his wife and five children. Reviews "This important new book sheds light on questions that have long gone unanswered. . .Every home should have it." -- E. Lynn Harris, author of I Say A Little Prayer "In The N Word, we just might have the definitive word on the essence of power and subordination in America." -- Christopher Benson, coauthor of Death of Innocence: The Story of the Hate Crime That Changed America "Jabari Asim persuasively explains why the N word remains a slur and a symbol of inequality." -- Mary Frances Berry, Geraldine R. Segal Professor of American Social Thought and Professor of History, University of Pennsylvania
