[PREVIEW] George Mason vs. Rhode Island -- Men's Basketball

The Mason men’s basketball team returns home to the Patriot Center today to host Atlantic 10 conference member Rhode Island at 4 p.m. in a non-conference matchup, the third in a three-year series started before Mason joined the A-10.

Mason holds the series at 2-0, with the last meeting between these two teams resulting in a 55-52 win for the Patriots.

URI (6-2) is on a three-game winning streak heading into this matchup, with most recent victories over McNeese State, UNC Asheville and UMass Lowell.

The Mason men’s basketball team travels to Princeton, NJ to take on Princeton at 8 p.m. tonight at Jadwin Gym. The Tigers and Patriots (4-1) meet for the first time in program history.

REVIEW: An Evening of One-Acts

Mason Players host their first one-act showcase with shows that cast ominous shadows on the human condition.

There are very few opportunities for students see a one act play. Until very recently, Mason had yet to find a way to produce shorter work that exceeded ten minutes but fell short of a full 90 minute play.

The “Evening of One-Acts” hosted by Mason Players from Nov. 21-24 finally gave students the chance to see two established one-act plays. As previous studio shows have been, these plays were directed, acted and designed by students.

Mason men's soccer season ends with loss in second round of NCAA Tournament

Mason men’s soccer team finished its run in the NCAA tournament, as the Patriots lost 1-0 to the University of New Mexico in the second round on Sunday night. A late goal by junior midfielder James Rogers in the 83rd minute materialized the dominance the Lobos exerted throughout the game.

On Thursday night, Mason men’s soccer team survived the roulette of penalties for the second time in its last four games to defeat a strong College of William and Mary side in the first round of the NCAA tournament. With the teams locked at 2-2 after 110 minutes of play, it was the composure and accuracy of Julio Arjona, Zach Herstek, Wes Sever and Chase Miller from the penalty spot, as well as a pair of saves by Steffen Kraus in the frame of the goal, that made the difference and sent the Patriots through.

The Mason men’s basketball team travels to New Rochelle, NY to take on Iona College at 2 p.m. today at Hynes Athletics Center. The Gaels and Patriots (4-0) meet for the third time in program history, with Mason having won both previous meetings in a home-and-home series in 2003 and 2004.

Iona (1-2) has played a tough non-conference schedule so far this season, with a win over Wofford at home and losses to Cleveland State and No. 2 ranked Kansas.

Hunger and Homelessness Week: Sleep Out in North Plaza

North Plaza became a camp out site Wednesday night for NOVA and GMU students. They spent the night on flattened cardboard boxes, huddled in their sleeping bags, under makeshift cardboard huts held together with duct tape.

 “The purpose was to raise awareness for the homeless and hunger victims,” said Mikael Manneklint, an international student from Sweden.

The sleepover was just one of many other events that were part of Hunger and Homelessness Action Week, sponsored by GMU Campus Ministry Association.

English Department challenges students to write a novel

            Writing a novel is difficult. Writing one in a month sounds impossible, but that is exactly what some Mason students intend to do this November when they participate in National Novel Writing Month, or better known as NaNoWriMo.

This annual nonprofit event challenges participants to write 50,000 words in a single month and attracts thousands of aspiring writers from around the globe.

After defeating Virginia Commonwealth University in a dramatic 3-2 overtime win to advance to the final game of the Atlantic 10 Championship, and defeating St. Louis for the title, Mason men’s soccer team will now face another former conference rival – the College of William and Mary – in the opening round of the 2013 NCAA Soccer Championship.
