New survey reveals differences between seniors and freshman

New results from the National Survey of Student Engagement revealed both progress and continuing challenges faced by George Mason University students.

Mason students lobby state government in Richmond

On Thursday, Feb. 7, the Mason Student Government led a group of students, faculty and alumni to the state capitol in Richmond to lobby state politicians on behalf of the university.

Junior Savannah Edwards, student government’s Secretary of MASON, and Vice President Jordan Foster began planning for Mason Lobbies in September 2012.

“Months ago we started coming up with an idea that we wanted lobbying to have a bigger place at Mason,” Edwards said in a statement to students, alumni and faculty.

Mason Dining brings new food options to campus

If you think George Mason University is out of new dining ideas, think again. Mason is bringing four new additions to campus this year including Doug the Food Dude, Lemongrass, Cupcakes Actually and Manhattan Pizza.

Student Health Services prepares for flu season

As the influenza pandemic continues to spread, George Mason University is promoting healthy precautions through its health service organizations.

According to Student Health Services, the flu is a respiratory virus that usually hits between October and April and varies in severity from year to year.

“The flu begins suddenly with high fever, body aches and fatigue,” SHS says on their website.

Mason senior wins international science essay contest

Karl Haislmaier, a George Mason University senior physics major, won $25,000 in an international science essay contest in October 2012.

Haislmaier’s essay, entitled The Emergence of Complexity in the Universe as Viewed from a Holistic Perspective, won second place in the New Cosmic Frontiers astronomy essay contest.

Mason officials address student concerns about mold in dorms

On Dec. 5, university officials met with students to discuss concerns about heightened levels of mold in the Commonwealth and Dominion dormitories.

“There are a lot of rumors going around the halls about mold,” said Chad Fehr, assistant director for resident life in the Rappahannock neighborhood. “We wanted to make sure we address this issue right off the bat.”

Word of mold-related illnesses began early in the week, when some students reported that others were going to the hospital in response to high levels of mold in their rooms and bathroom.

Student Involvement adopts a new smartphone app to appeal to students

George Mason University students can now see what events are happening on campus from their smartphones.

The Office of Student Involvement is now using OOHLALA’s campus app, an app which connects students to their campus communities.

 “You no longer have to log into a site to see anything - just tap the [OOHLALA] app to see what's going on,” Dennis Hicks, Associate Director of the Office of Student Involvement, said in an email.

Nutritional dining facility opens in Southside

Adding a fresh and unique concept to college dining halls, Mason Dining has received excellent feedback about Peak Performance, their newest addition to Southside.

On Nov. 19, Mason Dining held a grand opening for Peak Performance in Southside, which brought together President Angel Cabrera, various Mason Athletics coaches, members of Mason Dining, and student-athletes.

According to Ram Nabar, Mason Dining’s resident district manager, Peak Performance was a collaborative effort between Mason Dining and Mason’s athletic department.

Patriot Bike-Share hosts launch ceremony

The Patriot Bike-Share program, which allows people to navigate George Mason University’s Fairfax campus by bike, held its official launch ceremony at noon on Tuesday, Nov. 27.

The ceremony was relocated to Dewberry Hall in the Johnson Center from the North Plaza in response to the poor weather conditions.
