Mason baseball wraps up weekend series with 7-4 win over Fairfield
|The theme for Sunday’s game between George Mason and Fairfield seemed to be “anything you can do, I can do better” as both teams battled in the series finale at Spuhler Field.
When Fairfield would score in the top half of the inning, Mason would respond. Fairfield would set down the side in order, and Mason would do the same. In the end, Mason came out on top to beat Fairfield 7-4 in what was a back and forth matchup all day long.

|The Patriots found themselves in a struggle Saturday, battling the snow and late-inning resurgence from the Fairfield Stags.
Spuhler Field resembled a snow globe in the late innings of the game, as George Mason (5-4) fell to Fairfield (3-2) 5-3 in a marathon game that lasted 11 innings.
“It just stings. It stings in the end when you have opportunities and you can’t come through,” said junior Blaise Fernandez, who smoked a line drive right to the Fairfield third baseman, ending the game with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th.

|When Fairfield University’s Alex Witkus crossed home plate in the ninth inning, those in attendance at Spuhler Field in Fairfax let out a collective groan on Friday.
The run scored by Witkus gave the Stags a 6-5 lead — their first of the game — after the George Mason Patriots had scored all five of their runs in the first inning. But the Patriots would show resilience as they rallied back in the home half to steal a 7-6 win from the Stags.

Mason (3-3) took all three games against Iona (1-5) at Spuhler Field this weekend, including two big wins in Sunday’s double-header.
The Patriots dominated on the mound and in the batter’s box in the first game of the doubleheader, winning 13-1. The game featured outstanding performances from juniors Jared Gaynor and Tucker Tobin.

Prior to boarding the team bus and heading south to Charleston, S.C. for The Citadel Memorial Challenge, George Mason University baseball coach Bill Brown, entering his 33rd season, sat in his office looking over some papers in preparation for the 2013 season.
For Brown, who has coached the Patriots to 873 wins throughout his tenure, the expectations for the upcoming season were the same as they have been in years past.

He had much to be pleased with after scoring 25 points for his Georgia State University Panthers, who spoiled George Mason University's homecoming in a dominating 78-60 win.
