With George Mason University hosting the Patriot Invitational at the Aquatic and Fitness Center on the Fairfax campus, the swimming and diving team intended to defend their pool and showcase a respectable performance. 

Saunders, Patriots handle UMES Hawks in lopsided home opener win, 64-38

The George Mason University women’s basketball team handed the University of Maryland – Eastern Shore Hawks a lopsided 64-38 loss at the Patriot Center Tuesday night.

Senior guard Rahneeka Saunders scored a game-high 13 points, led the team with four steals and registered two assists to help the Lady Patriots (1-1) pick up a fifth win in as many meetings against the Hawks.

In their first game against outside competition, the George Mason Patriots were able to squeak past the Bowie State Bulldogs, 76-72 in an exhibition game on Thursday night at the Patriot Center.

Without preseason All-CAA selection Sherrod Wright (athletic department violation) and junior starting point guard Bryon Allen (shoulder/neck injury), Mason had to make up for their absence with sophomore guard Corey Edwards and Seton Hall transfer Anali Okoloji filling in.

In a primetime showdown between two Colonial Athletic Association rivals Saturday, the George Mason (10-5, 3-4) men’s soccer team fell to James Madison, 2-1 in front of a crowd of the 1,253 at George Mason Stadium.

Throughout the first half, the teams played two separate styles. The Patriots relied on set pieces, forcing four corner kicks, taking five shots. While the Dukes (6-5-3, 4-1-2) played an up-tempo game, creating chances with short one-touch passes between midfielders. However, neither team could break through on the score sheet.

Perhaps it was the frigid October night or the fatigue from only a couple days rest that led to the George Mason men’s soccer team's slow start Saturday night against their Colonial Athletic Association rivals, William & Mary (2-9-3, 0-4-2). But unlike the weather, the Patriots (9-4, 2-3) settled in and heated up as they went on to a 2-0 win.

A bundled-up crowd of just over 1,000 at George Mason Stadium, watched a first half where both teams traded chances, but neither team could finish.

Women's volleyball enters CAA competition with dominating win against Georgia State

In front of a crowd of nearly 300 people on Friday night, the George Mason University women’s volleyball team began their CAA conference season and had the start they were looking for.

Facing the Georgia State Panthers at the RAC in Fairfax, the lady Patriots won in straight sets (25-23, 25-20, 28-26). With that result Mason improved to 1-0 in the conference and 3-11 overall, while Georgia State fell to 0-1 in the conference and 2-11 overall.
