Report: GMU men's basketball had shortfall of $2.3 million in '11-'12

On Monday morning, the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission released a report detailing non-academic services and costs of higher education public institutions in Virginia.

The report addressed a number of issues facing the current landscape of college athletics, specifically in the state, including funding, student fees and revenue generation of basketball and football programs. 

Mason drops series rubber match against JMU, 5-2

You’d expect the rubber match of a series between two rivals to be an exciting, edge-of-your-seat slugfest, right? Sunday’s series finale between George Mason University and James Madison University, not so much.

The Patriots’ (11-12, 4-5 CAA) struggles on offense continued for the second straight game, dropping the series to JMU in a 5-2 bore-fest.

The Dukes (13-9, 6-2 CAA) continued to produce on offense, thanks for a multi-hit game from four different players.

The old adage says “when it rains, it pours,” and that seemed to be the theme for the game between George Mason University and James Madison University on Saturday afternoon.

The Patriots (11-11, 4-4 CAA) fell to the Dukes of JMU, 11-4 in what was a bipolar-type game for both sides.

JMU (12-9, 5-2 CAA) earned their 11 runs thanks to a six-run third inning and a devastating five-run ninth inning. The Patriots scored on a Tommy Vitaletti three-run homerun in the third inning, followed by a Ray Toto solo shot in the fourth.

Just last week, the George Mason Patriots’ spirits were probably at the lowest they had been all season. The team was in the midst of a five-game losing streak, including three conference games in that span — two against Georgia State and one against Northeastern University, bookending back-to-back losses to Richmond University.

Women's basketball falls to James Madison, 71-55 in lopsided home loss

Despite putting in an impressive first half display and registering 21 bench points on the night, the George Mason University women’s basketball team suffered a lopsided home loss, falling 71-55 to Colonial Athletic Association rival James Madison University.

Senior guard Rahneeka Saunders was the only player who scored in double figures for the Patriots (6-11, 1-5 CAA), registering 14 points and eight rebounds. Saunders was supported by reserves junior Janaa Pickard and senior Melissa Collier, who each scored nine points.

In a primetime showdown between two Colonial Athletic Association rivals Saturday, the George Mason (10-5, 3-4) men’s soccer team fell to James Madison, 2-1 in front of a crowd of the 1,253 at George Mason Stadium.

Throughout the first half, the teams played two separate styles. The Patriots relied on set pieces, forcing four corner kicks, taking five shots. While the Dukes (6-5-3, 4-1-2) played an up-tempo game, creating chances with short one-touch passes between midfielders. However, neither team could break through on the score sheet.

Women's hoops season comes to an end with loss to JMU

Plagued by turnovers all night, George Mason lost in the quarterfinals to second-seeded James Madison, 64-54, at the CAA Championships in Upper Marlboro, Md.  Amber Easter, who finished with 11 points in the game, committed a team high seven turnovers.
