Mason men's soccer season ends with loss in second round of NCAA Tournament

Mason men’s soccer team finished its run in the NCAA tournament, as the Patriots lost 1-0 to the University of New Mexico in the second round on Sunday night. A late goal by junior midfielder James Rogers in the 83rd minute materialized the dominance the Lobos exerted throughout the game.

On Thursday night, Mason men’s soccer team survived the roulette of penalties for the second time in its last four games to defeat a strong College of William and Mary side in the first round of the NCAA tournament. With the teams locked at 2-2 after 110 minutes of play, it was the composure and accuracy of Julio Arjona, Zach Herstek, Wes Sever and Chase Miller from the penalty spot, as well as a pair of saves by Steffen Kraus in the frame of the goal, that made the difference and sent the Patriots through.

After defeating Virginia Commonwealth University in a dramatic 3-2 overtime win to advance to the final game of the Atlantic 10 Championship, and defeating St. Louis for the title, Mason men’s soccer team will now face another former conference rival – the College of William and Mary – in the opening round of the 2013 NCAA Soccer Championship.

Mason men's soccer defeats VCU in overtime to advance to the A-10 Championship game

The Mason men’s soccer team defeated in-state rival Virginia Commonwealth University 3-2 on Friday night and became the first team to represent George Mason University in a championship game since its move to the Atlantic-10 conference.

Timi Mulgrew sealed the win with a header off a Zach Herstek cross only 34 seconds into the first overtime period. Herstek had a goal for himself in the 27th minute to bring Mason back to level terms after Dennis Castillo had capitalized on a poor play by the Patriots’ defense to give VCU the early lead.

Men's soccer scrapes past St. Joe's in PKs to advance to A10 semifinals

The Mason men's soccer team held off the St. Joseph's Hawks in penalty kicks, 4-2 this afternoon to advance to the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Championships. 

Both teams were held scoreless in regulation as Mason's goalkeeper and A10 Rookie of the Year Steffen Kraus finished with five saves while St. Joe's keeper Andrew D'Ottavi saved four shots.

With a 2-1 win over St. Bonaventure University over the weekend, the Mason men’s soccer team secured the second seed entering the A-10 conference championship today, facing Saint Joseph’s University in Dayton, Ohio.

PREVIEW: Weekend game schedule (1 Nov. 2013)

Mason men’s soccer team will face off against Rhode Island on Friday, Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. at George Mason Stadium in their last home game of the season. This is a rescheduled match from October, when pour playing conditions and heavy rain caused the game to be called off in the 55th minute with Mason up 2-0. The Patriots (7-2-3, 2-0-2 A-10) are undefeated at home and will look to finish off strong before heading to George Washington on Sunday to take on the Colonials.

Mason men's soccer pulls 1-1 draw against LaSalle

Mason men’s soccer team pulled a 1-1 draw against LaSalle on Sunday after playing through regulation and two overtime periods at George Mason Stadium.

Mason had a scoring chance in the 9th minute when Timi Mulgrew crossed the ball into the box. Zach Herstek deflected, and Jannik Eckenrode buried the shot in the corner. However, the goal was disallowed because Herstek was offside.

PREVIEW: Weekend game schedule (25 Oct. 2013)

Mason women’s soccer team will face off against George Washington on Friday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. at George Mason Stadium. The Patriots (6-8-1, 3-2 A-10) are coming off of a 2-1 overtime loss to Richmond and will look to bounce back in this matchup. In the final home game of the season, the team will honor seniors Lyndse Hokanson, Jazmin Cardoso, Casey Vornadore and Nicole Clark prior to kickoff. A Revolutionary Rivalry point is up for grabs and will be awarded to the winning team. 

PREVIEW: Weekend game schedule (18 Oct. 2013)

Mason men’s and women’s basketball teams will tip off their season at Mason Madness on Friday, Oct. 18 at 8 p.m. at the Patriot Center. Men’s head coach Paul Hewitt and women’s head coach Nyla Milleson will address the crowd before the men’s team takes part in the annual Green vs. Gold scrimmage.
