OPINION: Apathy about campus architecture

There was a time when buildings were not built in the ugliest and most offensive manner possible. That time is now past, and its passing is in few places more apparent than on the contemporary college campus. When our nation’s capital was being built, the architects looked back to the experts—to Rome and Greece—for inspiration. They built columns and arches and domes; they raised up out of the earth the most beautiful ruins man has seen. What, then, is the muse of our modern builder?

OPINION: Differences between college basketball and the NBA are game changers

A few weeks back, Richmond (13-9) beat Virginia Commonwealth (17-5). Last week, The University of Virginia (15-5) beat No. 19 NC State (16-5). Can anyone tell me what Richmond and UVA have in common? CORRECT! They were both beaten by Mason this season.

@gmuhoops said it best on Twitter: “Richmond beat VCU, UVA beat NC State. George Mason beat Richmond and UVA, oh college hoops”.

Mason student government reaffirms shared governance, does not address UVa request

When confronted to condemn the University of Virginia’s Board of Visitors rector, George Mason University’s student government took a stance—to not be involved.

“We are not involving ourselves in the affairs of U.Va. nor its BoV; it is not in our place to do so,” reads Resolution 27, which upholds Mason’s student government’s belief in “shared governance.”

OPINION: Campus construction is a cause for frustration

As the semester begins, prospective students stroll along the sidewalks of campus with their parents. Some of these school-scouts have likely visited Virginia Tech or The University of Virginia, two schools which boast stately architecture and a beautiful symmetry. Though I was not able to visit any universities before I enrolled at Mason, my first impression of the school was that it seemed park-like. Winding concrete sidewalks took students on tiny adventures to undiscovered buildings with odd names.

Mason-UVa men's basketball preview

With two major contributors, Erik Copes and Vaughn Gray, suspended due to student-athlete conduct violations, the challenge will be for the rest of the young team to pull out a win in tonight’s home opener against the University of Virginia at the Patriot Center at 7 p.m.

OPINION: Business interests, academia and the fiscal realities of contemporary education

Academia and business, those star-crossed lovers, locked horns in two major educational crises this past year. First, the University of Virginia was thrown into turmoil when their Board of Visitors suddenly and brazenly fired and subsequently rehired the university president who, up to that point, had served less than two years. The second catastrophe came this past week in Chicago when negotiations between the Chicago Teachers Union and the mayor dissolved into a full-on strike by the teachers, leaving nearly 400,000 students out of school.
