A new Subway restaurant opened for business Monday in the Rogers dorm building, adding a fourth sandwich location to the university’s Fairfax campus.

The new restaurant, which was completed over winter break alongside the new Rogers and Whitetop dorms, adds to the primarily lunch-focused dining locations of Sub Connection, La Pat and Gold Rush. It is the first dining location to open in the northwest section of campus, now home to 600 new beds and an expected 500 more in the next few years.

“It’s nice, it’s new, it’s clean,” said senior Ray Cuevas. “New students are lucky to live here.”

Students from the now-closed Commons housing moved into Rogers and nearby Whitetop this weekend.

The restaurant offers a full menu, including breakfast, just like off-campus Subway locations. On-campus Burger King and Taco Bell locations currently serve limited offering of their respective fast food chain’s menus. Students can use Mason Money, Meal Plans and Bonus Money to pay for their meals at the Subway.

Unlike other locations, the sandwich shop has no seating. Mason Dining intends the location to work for “grab and go” situations, like grabbing food and heading back to one’s dorm, according to Mark Kraner, executive director of campus retail operations.

“I’m glad they put it here,” said freshman and on-campus resident Crystal Jonson. “I just wish we could sit here.”

Next to the Subway is the Second Stop Patriot Shop, named on a play off of the Blue Ridge residence hall’s One Stop Patriot Shop. Like its counterpart, the store sells assortment of candies, microwavable meals, frozen meals, drinks and goods.

Both locations are operated by Sodexo.

The Subway will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

The convenience store is open from 7 a.m to midnight on weekdays and 10 a.m. to midnight on Saturdays and Sundays.
