George Mason University held its first student government meeting of the semester on Thursday. President Cabrera was in attendance to share his plans for the school.

Cabrera provided the attendees with a speech in which he emphasized the importance of leadership and defined his “new vision” for Mason. Cabrera explained how his goal is “one that we will all remember” in years to follow. He plans to develop a set of aspirations and to highlight achievements of Mason graduates.

Additionally, Cabrera mentioned several ideas that will promote Mason’s growth and allow it to become highly diverse and successful. This included his plans to expand the Prince William and Arlington campuses to promote larger enrollment at those campuses.

One of Cabrera’s most ambitious plans includes globalizing Mason and increasing its popularity in the international world. He hopes to increase the number of international applicants and diversity on campus.

In academics, Cabrera would like to expand the online education plan by adding more course options to meet student schedules. He also plans to introduce new disciplines to Mason’s curriculum in order to train individuals in different competitive fields to help them obtain more career opportunities.  In his talk, Cabrera placed emphasis on furthering research and defining success by the amount of increased research in different advancing fields.

Lastly, Cabrera hopes to “claim our fair share of welfare in the community “so that we can have the funding to support all future goals. He explained his ideas to manage student value and affordability and to have a better grasp on what we spend and what we need.

After Cabrera’s speech, student committee leaders discussed important information and dates regarding upcoming events and meetings.
