Top 5 weekend picks October 18

Every week Connect2Mason will offer five entertainment picks for your weekend. Ranging from on-campus to off-campus events, Connect2Mason's Top 5 will give you a jump start on your weekend. Here are the Top 5 picks for this weekend:
 

  1. Youth Open Mic Night
    When:
    Saturday, October  20 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00p.m.
    Where: Busboys and Poets 2021 14th Street NW. Washington D.C. Local D.C. hotspot Busboys and Poet’s will present its youth-run open mic series. Run entirely by teenagers the open mic night will allow for those under twenty to rap, sing, do spoken word or do storytelling. This month’s youth open mic night will feature actor, comedian, director, and singer Jamarr Hall from Philadelphia, Pa. There will be a five dollar cover charge and tickets can be purchased starting at 10 a.m. Youth open mic night is held on the third Saturday of every month
  2. Dr. Who Happy Hour
    When: Friday, October 19 from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
    Where: Black Cat
    Fans of the popular BBC television series “Dr. Who” may not be aware of the Black Cat’s weekly “Dr. Who” happy hour. The Black Cat shows the latest episodes of “Dr. Who" while serving specialized drinks while showing the episode. Go watch an episode of “Dr. Who” with other fans while enjoying a nice drink. This week, the Black Cat will be playing the episode “Bad Wolf.”

    The event is free, minus the drinks you purchase.
     
  3. Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble
    When:
    Sunday, October 21 at 4 p.m.
    Where: Center for the Arts

    Formed in 1967, this chamber group was created to present works for quintets and octets. Violinist Joshua Bell has performed and recorded with the Academy for numerous years. The Academy has gained rave reviews from both the New York Times and the Washington Post. The ensemble is noted as one of the best chamber ensembles in the world having traveled all around the world. The performance on Sunday will include the Brahams’ Sextet in G major, Shostakovich’s Prelude and the Mendelssohn Octet for Strings. Don’t miss your opportunity to see this great ensemble for free with your Mason student ID.

    Tickets can be purchased at the Center for the Arts box office. Two students tickets can be purchased with a valid student ID.

  4. Invisible Children screening of “Move”
    When:
    October 18 at 7:30 p.m.
    Where: Johnson Center Bistro
    After the tsunami of last year’s Kony 2012 video surged to the top of both activism and controversy the creators of Invisible Children have more to say. The new Invisible Children film “Move” documents the aftermath of what occurred after Kony 2012 and the actions that followed. Featuring candid conversations with the people working behind the scenes at Invisible Children, this is a must watch event for those that were even remotely interested in the Kony 2012 campaign. Invisible Children GMU will be hosting the screening and will be telling individuals how to continue to get involved in ongoing efforts to combat the Lord’s Resistance Army.

    The event is free, but donations will be accepted.
     
  5. Cirque Chinois
    When:
    October 19 at 8 p.m. and October 20 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.
    Where: Center for the Arts

    The acclaimed Chinese circus troupe comes to George Mason University as part of their North American tour. The National Circus of the People’s Republic of China has influenced groups such as the Ringling Brother and Cirque du Soleil. Featuring their signature acts such as Great Teeterboard, Grand Flying Trapeze, and the Group Contortion the group has been awarded a slew of worldwide acclaim for both their style and talent. Directly from Beijing, you will not want to miss out on seeing these performers live for a one-of-a-kind experience that includes juggling, trapeze and contortions.

    Two free student tickets can be purchased with a valid student ID at the Center for the Arts Box Office.
