Top 5 weekend picks November 1

Every week Connect2Mason will offer five entertainment picks for your weekend. Ranging from on-campus to off-campus events, Connect2Mason's Top 5 will give you a jump start on your weekend. Here are the Top 5 picks for this weekend:
 

  1. Dr. John & the Lower 911 Band and the Blind Boys of Alabama
    When: Saturday, Nov. 3 at 8 p.m.
    Where: Center for the Arts


    Enjoy a night of jazz, blues and gospel music to brighten up your weekend. The legendary Blind Boys of Alabama join forces with legend Dr. John to bring the music of New Orleans to George Mason University. Formed over 70 years ago, the Blind Boys of Alabama have been celebrated across the country, and the world, for their remarkable musical styles and diverse repertoire. This Grammy Award winning group will not disappoint for music fans of all genres.

    Up to two tickets can be reserved with a valid Mason Student ID at the Center for the Arts Box Office.

     
  2. Screening of “Voices El-Sayed”
    When: Sunday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m.
    Where: Research Hall Room 163


    A film screening of the film “Voices from El-Sayed” will be on campus this weekend. The film focused on the Bedouin Village of El-Sayed located in the Geve desert. An award-winning Israeli film tells the story of the largest population of deaf people in the world. While some would consider deafness a handicap, these individuals do not. Instead, the individuals of this village have adapted a unique form of sign language making it the most popular communication method in the area. Following the screening, director Oded Adomi Leshem will be hosting a Q&A session. The event is free to the public.

     
  3. L.A. Theatre Works presents “Pride and Prejudice”
    When: Sunday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m.
    Where: Center for the Arts


    To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s most famous novel “Pride and Prejudice” L.A. Theatre Works will be performing a live radio drama. For fans of Jane Austen and “Pride and Prejudice”, experience the novel as you’ve never experienced it before. L.A. Theatre Works is the premiere in radio dramas and has received many acclaimed awards in the theater world. Featuring Broadway veteran Jane Carr, this is a do not miss opportunity for fans of Austen’s novel or the film.

    Up to two tickets can be reserved with a valid Mason Student ID at the Center for the Arts Box Office.

     
  4. Koji
    When: Friday, Nov. 2 at 9 p.m.
    Where: American University at Kay Chapel


    Having toured with Warped Tour this summer, Koji has quickly gained a strong fan base. Coming from a punk-rock scene, Koji has quickly established himself as a confident solo acoustic artist. Performing at George Mason University’s annual Harvest Folk Festival back in October, come see Koji perform songs off his currently untitled upcoming album.

    An advocate for social justice, Koji incorporates his love of music with this social activism. Sponsored by the Invisible Children chapter at American University, donations will be accepted at the door to help ongoing efforts to help those affected by the Lord’s Resistance Army in Central Africa.
     
  5. Pumpkin Madness
    When: Saturday, Nov. 3 and Sunday, Nov. 4 from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. 
    Where: Cox Farms


    Join in Cox Farms annual tradition of getting rid of your Halloween pumpkins. Bring your rotting pumpkin and drop, smash and squish it to a pulp. Drop your pumpkin for the highest points at Cox Farms and revel in the destruction of your old pumpkin. No pumpkin will be left behind. Bring your friends and family and enjoy the final days of fall.
