10 Songs that Define America's Beatle Craze

Feb. 9, 2014 stands as the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ historically televised performance on the Ed Sullivan Show. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr’s performance resulted in a record-breaking 73 million television viewers tuning in, instantly infecting America with the  Beatlemania craze.

Students join in Vietnamese festivities for Lunar New Year

Many students have heard about the Chinese New Year, but the Vietnamese and other cultures also celebrate the Lunar New Year, which is the beginning of a new year based on the lunar calendar.

On Jan. 29, Mason’s Vietnamese Student Association celebrated the Lunar New Year with cultural food, traditional games and New Year’s crafts.

The Vietnamese New Year, or Tết, is an important cultural holiday to Vietnamese families which typically  involves three days of celebration.

Irish-American student returns to Ireland to film his senior project

Senior Paul O’Halloran, a film and video studies major, is headed to Ireland this Christmas to shoot his senior film, “Ard Laoch na hÉireann,” which is dedicated to his great-grandfather. O’Halloran, who is Irish, said he hopes the film will show a different side of Ireland. O’Halloran answered some questions about his film for Fourth Estate.

What is the film about?

Artist Min Li exposes Mason campus to traditional Chinese art

Artist Min Li comes to Mason campus to battle against the "made in China" image of Chinese art.

This month, the Confucius Institute welcomes visitors to its Chinese Paper Cutting Exhibit at Mason. The exhibit is located in the JC 123 Gallery and features both the traditional works of artists from China's Fujian province and the works of modern artist Min Li.

The works have been transported to several universities in the U.S. with the help of Li’s liason to Mason Yunhan Zhang.

International Cafe heightens global understanding at Mason

The Office of International Program and Services welcomes all students to sample the many cultures represented on the Mason campus through their monthly International Café.

The event’s mission is to make students comfortable with Mason’s diversity through international snacks and drinks, along with booths showcasing different countries and their cultures.

Dance class provides a taste of African culture

Students circle up and get their marching orders. Once they receive their schedule the instruction begins and students are forced to step out of their comfort zone and dance their “buttsy” off.

“You hear about this class before you ever walk in,” said junior Elle Thomas, a current student of Nuamah’s. “The class exceeds [your] expectations.”

Pride Week event highlights overlooked LGBTQ African-American authors

The stories of black gay and lesbian writers are often erased from history. Even when homosexual, black authors have been included in history, like Langston Hughes, their sexuality is often erased from their narrative. American students often learn about Hughes’ poems such as “A Dream Deferred,” but rarely do they hear about his poem “Café 3am” which describes police brutality against the gay community.

OPINION: Mason's diverse population prevents hateful ignorance

I consider Mason’s diversity an asset, and I also believe exposure to culture’s outside one’s own is an integral part of the college experience. Thus, I was shocked to hear about the recent string of hate crimes at Oberlin College in Ohio. In the past month, students’ inboxes have been brimming with emails from administration in response to acts of racism, homophobia and anti-Semitism on the same campus that prides itself on being the first college to regularly admit female and African American students.

"In Unison" showcases work of 20 D.C.-based artists

On Wednesday Feb. 6,  George Mason University’s Mason Hall Atrium Gallery buzzed with excitement as artists, art students and art aficionados visited the opening reception for the final exhibition of the art series "In Unison" that featured work by 20 Washington, D.C.-based artists.
