Monday, March 19
The Fighting Season: The Documentary Work of Louie Palu

What it is: Award winning photojournalist Louie Palu is giving this multimedia presentation covering the conflict in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Why it’s our pick: Over his two-decade-long career, Palu has covered sociopolitical subjects as diverse as working conditions in underground mines to the prison in Guantanamo Bay.  His work has been exhibited worldwide and has received numerous awards.  Those interested in the modern social and political climate won't want to miss it.

Where: Johnson Center Cinema, 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday, March 20
Japanese Spirit: Rebuilding After 3.11

What it is: This event is a memorial for the one year anniversary of the Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami that devastated Japan on March 11, 2011.  Joe Kaleda with the Fairfax County Fire Department and Britt Lake, Director of Programs for Globalgiving, will speak on the aftermath of the disaster and the progress of the recovery effort.  A reception will follow.

Why it’s our pick: Mason Smiles for Japan, a coalition of students, faculty and staff formed after the earthquake, has spent the last year raising funds to aid the recovery effort.  The event will conclude with a ceremony in which these funds are donated to Globalgiving.

Where: SUB I Patriot's Lounge, 5 – 7 p.m.

Tuesday, March 20
Better This World Screening

What it is: Film and Media Studies presents this showing of Better This World, a documentary directed by Katie Galloway and Kelly Duane de la Vega that follows the story David McKay and Bradley Crowder, accused domestic terrorists arrested at the 2008 Republican National Convention.  The directors themselves will be available for questions following the screening.

Why it’s our pick: By covering topics such as friendship, loyalty and radical protest through the frame of the post-9/11 surveillance culture, Better This World provides a compelling look at the thin distinction between what one side calls terrorism and the other calls activism.  The chance to meet the directors should provide further incentive to attend for those interested.

Overcoming Procrastination

What it is: Counseling and Psychological Services is holding this seminar to help keep students from falling into the the "not now, later" trap.

Why it’s our pick: With finals approaching, getting a headstart on successful study habits seems like a valid pursuit.  Attendees will learn what makes people procrastinate and how those pitfalls can be avoided.

Where: SUB I Room 3129, 1:30 – 2:45 p.m.

Saturday, March 24 and Sunday, March 25
Harlem Globetrotters Game

What it is: The Harlem Globetrotters will be bringing their high-flying basketball antics to the Patriot Center twice this weekend in what's sure to be a delight for sports fans and non-fans alike.  Tickets are available through the Patriot Center box office and other Ticketmaster outlets.

Why it’s our pick: The Globetrotters are known for their athleticism and commitment to good sportsmanship, as well as thier famous stuntwork.  Whistle along with Sweet Georgia Brown while you watch the game!

Where: Patriot Center, 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday
