After a hard-fought, rain-soaked game in front of a raucous crowd, University of Virginia freshman forward Brian Ownby scored the game-winning goal with 43 seconds left in the second overtime period to give Virginia a 3-2 victory over George Mason University in Mason’s season opener last Friday night.

Recycled Percussion Rocks EFF

Students were welcomed to Harris Theatre on Friday night for the second Every Freakin’ Friday event of the semester. Students came to enjoy what they may have thought was any regular band, automatically expecting a drum set, a guitar, and bass, but after hearing Recycled Percussion, students were astonished. The band, which does about 100 to 180 shows a year, goes through ten pairs of drum sticks a show and burns 80 thousand dollars in fuel while on tour, has been playing together since high school according to band members.

Hail to the Chief And His Musical Tastes, Too

By Broadside Style Columnist Andy Minor

Over the past two weeks, I've spent a fair amount of time watching the Democratic and Republican National conventions. I'm sure many of you have as well, and that you're all doing your best to stay as informed as possible. But for my article this week, I want to shed some light on both Obama and McCain's campaigns; a part that wasn't necessarily highlighted during either convention: their official campaign songs.

OPINION: Birth Control is not Abortion

By Broadside Correspondent Sabra Hayes

The newly proposed bill by the Bush Administration redefines abortion as “any of the various procedures—including the prescription and administration of any drug or the performance of any procedure or any other action—that results in the termination of the life of a human being in utero between conception and natural birth, whether before or after implantation.” Basically, this rule is stating that several types of birth control, including the Pill and Plan B (also known as emergency contraception), is the same as abortion.

Why I Wouldn’t Trade This Campus For Anything

By Broadside Opinion Writer Scott Mason

In an age where we are constantly examining our own image in the world on personal and organizational levels, it is sometimes difficult to come out with a clear and concise vision of identity. As a student at George Mason University, my own identity has been changing since the day I stepped foot on this campus. Great professors have come and gone, and so have great Mason traditions, areas on campus and even parking spaces. We exist in a series of ever-changing contradictions, and it is here on this campus that I, along with thousands of others, have found a temporary home. Mason is the only place where I care to stay at this juncture in my life. However, I am the last one to be content with the current circumstances that plague so many stdents.

Heard Around the Style Corner

We Hear That...

On Tuesday, Apple is holding a press conference to make a super secret announcement that nobody in the press world knows anything about. Though some speculate that the announcement could have to do with yet another iPod upgrade or an iTunes subscription service, nobody knows for sure. We’re hoping for the latter.

Pop Artist’s Sculpture On Display in Washington, D.C.

By Broadside Staff Writer Abegail Matienzo

Following Sept. 11, 2001, few structures based near the vicinity of the World Trade Center remained unharmed. Despite being no more than a block away from Ground Zero at the time of the attacks, the 31-foot, blue stainless steel sculpture, “Modern Head” by pop artist Roy Lichtenstein emerged virtually unscathed. As of August 27, 2008, visitors can go to the corner of 9th and F streest in Washington, D.C., and witness this remarkable work in person.
