So Mason’s loss may just come back to bite them. They had a shot at Northeastern on Saturday, but the late foul by Ryan Pearson may have cost the Patriots the game. It was one of the lowest-scoring contests I’ve ever witnessed. No doubt it was because of the referees’ tendency to allow contact everywhere — on offense and defense, on shooting and dribbling — without blowing the whistle.

The Maryland Terrapins (16-4), ranked 11th in the nation, defeated the George Mason Patriots (3-8) by a final score of 35-6. Sophomore Mendbagana Tovuujav extended his amazing winning streak to nine matches. However, these were the only points scored by the Patriots all night.

The first two matches saw quick covers by the Maryland wrestlers, sophomore Pat Strizki and senior Steve Bell. Sophomore Denny Herndon came off a leg injury from his freshman season and is now beginning to perform a bit better on the leg.

Freshman forward Tiana Kallenberger has been devoted to sports and has used her skills at George Mason University to power through defenses to put herself in the running for conference awards.

Before coming to Mason, she played for the Trojans of University High School in Irvine, Calif. More than a decade ago, Kallenberger’s parents pushed her to play a wide variety of sports, throwing her into the world of an athlete at a young age.
She spent her time playing soccer, basketball and swimming, while involved in student council and some school clubs.

There is always construction on George Mason University’s campuses, but a donation of 37 acres of land from Van Metre companies in Loudoun County, Va. gives students a reason to expect even more changes.

“The Van Metre Family . . . has had a long relationship with Mason and the Northern Virginia community, and they were looking for a way to honor [the late] Mr. Van Metre,” said Jerry Coughter, the executive officer for the Loudoun site administration. “They’ve owned the land in Loudoun for years and are looking to help the community and higher education.”
