A draft self-study report of George Mason University’s National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I athletics program has been made available online for public comment.

Collected suggestions and concerns will be considered by the report’s steering committee before the final drafting of the university’s submission for NCAA recertification, a process intended to ensure an institutional commitment to the standards of integrity required for participation in its intercollegiate athletics system.

The recertification process, which occurs every 10 years, also determines compliance with the rules and regulations of the Colonial Athletic Association.

Mason’s draft report encompasses 100 separate self-study items, and is broken down into three categories of focus: Governance and Commitment to Rules Compliance, Academic Integrity, and Gender and Diversity Issues and Student Well-Being.

The 272-page document additionally outlines significant changes affecting the institution and/or its athletic programs since the last assessment in 2000, with mention of changes in key senior-level positions, development of new athletic centers and rapid growth in student population, and increased visibility from the men’s basketball team’s Final Four appearance in 2006.

Students, faculty, staff and other members of Mason community are directed to e-mail Martin Ford, chair of the NCAA Division I Athletics Certification Steering Committee and acting dean of Mason's College of Education and Human Development, with concerns, questions and other items to consider before the final submission.

Deadline for consideration is Friday, April 23 at 5 p.m. Ford’s e-mail is mford@gmu.edu.
