New dining options to come to Prince William campus

New dining options will be brought to George Mason University’s Prince William campus in an  effort to expand the satellite campus .

Three franchise restaurants—Subway, Zabb Thai, and Wings, Pizza-N-Things—will be coming to Beacon Hall, a multi-use building that will feature graduate apartments upstairs.

Civil engineering students to bring water to Nicaraguan community

This summer, civil engineering students in Engineers for International Development will implement a project intended to bring accessible water to a small community in Nicaragua.

EfID plans to install a new well, a solar-powered water storage tank, and pipes to transport water to homes in the Grande Sabana community of Nicaragua. The community has two inefficient wells and no way to store water.

Mason Police survey gives students a voice

Over the past month, many George Mason University students have seized the opportunity to express their opinions about the Mason police department through the Mason Community Police Survey. While the results are not expected back for another week, the survey already has students talking.

 According to an email by President Ángel Cabrera, the survey was developed by the Police-Community Advisory Council to collect important information to improve the performance of the police force.

On March 28, Connect2Mason sat down with Fairfax County Supervisor John Cook to discuss the relationship between the university and the community, his initial impressions of President Ángel Cabrera, and upcoming renovations to University Hall.

Cook was elected to the Board of Supervisors in 2009. 

 

Mason ACHIEVES combats concussions in new partnership with Prince William County schools

George Mason University, in association with Prince William County Schools and the Potomac Health Foundation, has established the ACHIEVES Project. The project aims to assist local High Schools and Middle Schools in cooperating with Virginia’s Student-Athlete Protection Act and to provide better health services to students who suffer a concussion.

Students speak out against polling location change

At a public hearing held by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, students spoke out in opposition to a motion that would have changed the polling location on campus from University Hall to Mason Hall.

“There were challenges with the University Hall location. We had people voting in a concession area rather than in a closed room,” said Cameron Quinn, general registrar for the county. “There have also been issues with parking over at University Hall.”

VIDEO: Should large soft drinks be banned?

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg recently proposed banning large soft drinks. When the case was brought to the court a judge said the law was “arbitrary and capricious” and he didn’t allow the bill. We walked around Mason’s campus and asked students, “Do you believe there should a ban on large soft drinks?” 

Spring break construction to limit reserved parking

Students who park in the Rappahannock Neighborhood may need to move their car before the start of spring break.

Construction on George Mason University's new Shenandoah Residence Hall is expected to begin over spring break, forcing many students to relocate their cars from the northern part of Lot R by 7 p.m. on Friday, March 8.

County supervisor to hold online discussion with students

George Mason University’s representative on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will hold an online discussion with students through Mason’s subreddit.

John Cook, who was first elected to the board of supervisors in 2009, will answer students’ questions on March 7, between 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
