Fairfax city council discusses future of downtown with Mason student government

Representatives from George Mason University Student Government met with the full Fairfax City Council to discuss the relationship between the city and the university.

The special session, held on Feb. 19 in Mason Hall, focused on encouraging more students to spend time in Old Town Fairfax, located less than a mile north of the Fairfax campus.

Interim police chief announces application to stay on permanently

On Monday, Feb. 11 2013, the time came for Interim Police Chief Drew Tracy to decide whether he was going to apply to stay on as the chief of police.

“Yes,” Tracy answered with characteristic directness. “I talked it over with my wife, I called some of my friends over the years and went over the pluses and minuses. In the end, being able to participate in the academic side played a big role, and today I applied for the job.”

Mason student government reaffirms shared governance, does not address UVa request

When confronted to condemn the University of Virginia’s Board of Visitors rector, George Mason University’s student government took a stance—to not be involved.

“We are not involving ourselves in the affairs of U.Va. nor its BoV; it is not in our place to do so,” reads Resolution 27, which upholds Mason’s student government’s belief in “shared governance.”

Community updated on Mason transportation and construction projects

At the quarterly university community forum, nearby residents received updates on different construction and transportation projects around George Mason University’s Fairfax campus. The forum was held on Jan. 30 at Kings Park Library Burke.

Mason Police engage in crisis training

There was a hypothetical shooting last week at the George Mason Campus. This imaginary shooter opened fire in the concourse of the patriot center, no count of the wounded as yet. Police engaged the “shooter” and local Fire and Rescue squads immediately evacuated the victims to nearby hospitals.

The Mason Enterprise Center held an open house to showcase completed renovations of its facility.

“Our primary goal is to support the needs of growing companies,” said Keith Segerson, executive director of MEC. “We provide the tools, insights and infrastructure businesses need to succeed in the ever-changing and competitive marketplace.”
