Student group serves Mason through technology

Student-Run Computing and Technology, a student group at George Mason, has been putting its computer science skills to the test for the potential benefit of the whole Mason community.

Created by computer science student Luke Faraone and the manager of Advanced Network Technologies Ben Allen, SRCT has been working on a number of independent computer science projects that would, once operational, be potentially useful to students.

Mason Dining hosts season fun at farmer's market and fair

George Mason University’s dining services collaborated with Keany Produce Co. to host the Southside Farmer’s Market and Fair yesterday afternoon in celebration of National Food Day. This is the second time Southside has hosted the farmer’s market, this time with seasonal features.

Seasonal produce was available for purchase such as spaghetti squash, cabbage, potatoes, cauliflower, apples, apple cider, and candy apples.

GMU Golden Key chapter receives Golden Chapter award

In June 2012, the George Mason University chapter of the Golden Key International Honor Society was awarded the highest status available to chapters of the society.

“When a chapter is a Gold Chapter they are becoming leaders on campus and servicing their community on above average standards,” said Traci Gordon, associate director of U.S. university relations for the organization. According to Gordon, in order to achieve Gold status, a chapter has to excel in the three Golden Key pillars: academics, leadership and service.

Everlasting Life Café no longer coming to University Hall

Everlasting Life Café will no longer open a location at George Mason University because café management made an economic decision to terminate the lease, according to Mark Kraner, executive director of Campus Retail Operations.

Everlasting Life Café serves 100 percent vegan food with organic and raw options, according to their website.  The café planned to occupy a space in University Hall this semester, however, after finalizing the construction costs they withdrew.

Applications being accepted for Patriot Leaders, Resident Advisors and Peer Advisors

Patriot Leaders help new students and their families learn and familiarize themselves with life at George Mason University. Their primary duty is to work with orientation programming during summer break, in which they help run orientation. Patriot Leaders must also be available to help with Family Programming, Fall Retention Programming, and Welcome Week programming. Applicants can apply online at Patriot Leader website.

President Obama to pay another visit to Mason this Friday

President Barack Obama will be visiting George Mason University for the second time this month on Friday, Oct. 19.

The campaign event will be held at the RAC Field next to the Recreation and Athletic Complex on the Fairfax campus. Doors are set to open at 8:45 a.m.

A limited number of tickets will be available to Mason students.

Released security report reveals surprising statistics

George Mason University’s 2012 Annual Security Report detailed a surprising change in crime rates over the past three years.

The report covers on and off-campus housing in Fairfax as well as Prince William and Arlington.

Mason student develops university weather program

 

George Mason University now has its own weather program.

Nick Stasiak, a freshman at Mason, is starting “Forecast GMU,” which will provide daily weather forecasts for the Fairfax area.

Stasiak has experience with forecasting.

As of right now, “Forecast GMU” is only on social networking sites, but Stasiak says the station will most likely expand once it has gotten off the ground.

Mason Dining offers healthy choices across campus

George Mason University students no longer have to fall victim to the clichéd “freshman fifteen.”

Mason Dining now offers a variety of healthy food choices amidst the presence of fast food, as well as opportunities to meet with a registered dietitian.
