Summit looks at importance of community colleges in higher-ed

White House holds summit on community colleges and higher-ed

The White House Summit on Community Colleges will be held today (Tuesday) in Washington.

President Obama asked Jill Biden to host the summit to bring attention to the nation’s community college system and the role those institutions play in higher education and work force development.

Participants include members of the Obama administration, community college representatives and students, business leaders and philanthropic leaders.

Hiring outlook positive as career and internship fair hits campus

New statistics show better hiring prospects for 2011 college graduates just as University Career Services plans to host a job and internship fair this week.

The statistics released last month by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, show that employers expect to hire 13.5 percent more new graduates from the class of 2011 than they hired from the class of 2010.

Caffeinated political conversations brew at Mason

For most people on campus coffee and tea is something found at Starbucks or Jazzman’s. It’s what propels late night study sessions and what makes it possible to sit through an 8 a.m. class.

Fimian touts business experience during Mason visit

The George Mason College Republicans hosted Congressional Candidate Keith Fimian at their meeting Tuesday night.

Fimian, a candidate for Virginia’s 11th Congressional District, which includes the Mason campus, spoke about his candidacy for about 20 minutes to a group of 40 people gathered on the third floor of the Johnson Center.

After arriving over a half-hour late, Fimian talked about his experience as a businessman and CEO and how that experience would benefit him if elected to congress.

Hampton Roads residents get stuck in elevator [updated]

Five Hampton Roads resident students started the semester by getting trapped in and later rescued from their building’s elevator Sunday night.

The group was traveling from the third floor down to the first floor a little after 11 p.m. when the elevator car started to shake. The car made a loud noise and then dropped slightly, according to Molly O’Rourke, who was one of those trapped in the car.
